Review
It would be easy to give the Flaming Lips a free pass at this point since they have yet to release a lackluster album in their 26-year career, but their releases are often such a mind-consuming experience that it becomes impossible not to criticize or complement. Their twelfth studio album, Embryonic, is particularly true of this. Immediate comparisons this will involve Zaireeka, their massive other double-disc offering, but only because of the effort’s enormous scope. There has been no other Flaming Lips album that is strongly comparable to this one, both in thematic effort and general style. Basically, Embryonic is a mess when compared to the ethereal works of Yoshimi or The Soft Bulletin where laid-back anthems like “Do You Realize??” and “Race for the Prize” were Lips standards. On Embryonic there are no heartwarming singles that casual fans will adore, nor fluttery examples of bubblegum-pop that provide some ease to the always-present level of experimentation. So, with this in mind, why exactly is Embryonic one of their best releases to date? Like many Flaming Lips releases, the reason becomes apparent after a full listen. Even though there is little conceptual theme or directed cohesiveness on Embryonic, the group’s tendency to constantly explore and engross in varying musical realms emits a vast array of satisfaction that accumulates throughout the release to eventually create one of the most lasting impressions of the year.
Like most Flaming Lips albums, Embryonic begins with a kick-in-the-face sort of track. Guitar distortions whimper in disarray, the reverb-heavy percussion plays with a sense of unpredictable fury, and Coyne delivers an eerie croon that finds itself reminiscent of Joy Division’s Ian Curtis in its drolly robotic allure. In doing so, “Convinced of the Hex” is a clear ode to both Kraut-rock and post-punk. The layers of sound build up until the rhythm section becomes the showstopper, gradually introducing bursts of bass as the percussion intensifies with heavy hi-hats. It nearly makes the listener picture an automation line, one superb addition after another. The different keyboard chord that appears after every other measure also does a great job of keeping this one in place in adding subtly invigorating forms of melodic variation in addition to Coyne’s vocals. One prominent method for his vocals throughout the album is to mix deadpan precision with emotive fury, like in “Convinced of the Hex” when he goes from a Curtis sound-alike to possessing the yelps of Britt Daniel (a la Spoon’s “The Ghost of You Lingers”) in the most inimitable way possible. This occurs again in “The Sparrow Looks Up at the Machine”, one of the most conventional Flaming Lips tracks due to its emphasis on electronic psychedelia. The production can actually be compared to Radiohead’s In Rainbows in that way, with multitudes of static bass clashing with heavily involved percussion to create atmospheres both ethereal and chaotic. Along with “Convinced of the Hex”, it packs an outstanding one-two punch to kick off an album full of surprises and engrossing stylistic maneuvers.
“The Sparrow Looks Up at the Machine” provides the listener with some nice Yoshimi nostalgia, though the album rarely goes in that direction again. “Evil”, one of the few ballads on the album, is one of the few exceptions. A synth progression possessing three notes repeats for several months as Coyne laments the past’s irreversible injustices. Backing vocals caress the melody nicely with the additional strings, though it never brings the listener to a place of complete satisfaction. Sure, it is soothing and relatively harmless, but when preceded by two gems it evidently lacks the full-bodied enigma despite its initial beauty. The same can be said for “The Impulse”, a nice novelty lullaby featuring vocoded synths over a half-symphonic, half-jazzy layered background. Once again though, the novelty of vocoders wears thin to the point where the majestic use of strings cannot salvage it enough. Perhaps it is being too critical, but when an artist releases a double-album there has to be due consideration for what would have been better removed. These are nice efforts, but they pale in comparison to rich compositions like “Convinced of the Hex” and “Powerless”, where constant compositional evolution is occurring throughout the entire five or six minutes. Coyne is a hard worker and extremely talented musician, but one gets the feeling that when he is not satisfied with a song he topples on strings or similar additives until the issue is cloaked, whether it is repetition or instrumental miscues. On a double-album, just tossing it out altogether would have been the wiser.
“Powerless” is indeed the biggest achievement on an album full of many, combining evolutionary post-rock with the touch of sparkling keys and unconventionally boisterous guitar solos, the latter of which sounds more like impulsive chordal strikes than melodic construction. There are several guitars to accompany keys which glitter gracefully throughout, the most prominent emitting a single chord that abrasively leads the effort with heavy distortion and hand swipes. It is a wonderful technique, mainly because the subtle and less audible guitar accompaniments provide beautiful additions thanks purely to the group’s songwriting skills. The only major variation occurs when the western-y bass line suddenly drops a few pitches with each succession, the lead guitar remaining steadily boisterous as the others emit stunning melodic whispers that will send chills down under listener’s spine. The way these instruments and melodies combine to create this epic force is absolutely stunning, making this one of the best Flaming Lips tracks released. The type of keys present here are used prominently in most of the album’s tracks, whether in the disastrously noisy Miles David-influenced “Aquarius Sabotage” or the more cohesive “Sagittarius Silver Announcement”, where Bowie meets new-age psychedelia in the vein of Spiritualized. In messes like “Aquarius Sabotage” or the overly percussive “Your Bats” it is too hidden away, especially in the latter where mostly everything is indistinguishable apart from the overly spastic percussion. In the more focused efforts though, it reminds us that this is a group intent on mastering both loud guitars and twinkles of keys. Hardly surprising considering their prolific resume.
The second disc begins with another knockout force in “The Ego’s Last Stand”, an effort that shows off the rhythmic precision of this album beautifully. Percussion has never before been so prominent for the Flaming Lips, so it is nice to see a diversified amount of efforts in regard to all sorts of instruments being the beneficiary in leading tracks. Percussion and bass appear to converse here by rarely coexisting, instead taking turns speaking before guitars and brass-like mute effects concoct a truly spectacular and anthemic chorus. Bass has always been a steady force though, so seeing its dominance in efforts like “Watching the Planets” is no surprise but as satisfying as ever. A stunning closer, it is a ceaseless expedition into fury that is complemented by a vigorous rhythm section and highly ardent vocal melody. Its heavy reverb, intentional sort of audible disarray, and heavy emphasis on rhythm are all indicative of the album it is placed on. Embryonic is hardly the most beautiful album to the Flaming Lips’ name, but its rough edges are so defined that the result is more engrossing than any of their albums from the past decade. Like any double-album there are a handful of tracks whose absence would not be missed, but the highlights are so memorable and purely fascinating in approach that it propels Embryonic to the echelon of 2009’s best releases.

Tracklist:

2. From Scythe to Sceptre 06:58
3. Outlive the Hand 08:39
4. Sun's Delusion 09:09
5. Held in Hollows 07:24
6. Husks 02:48
7. Aspect 05:52
8. Countless Skies 10:00
Stone's Reach is mainly like The Frail Tide vol.2. The sound has pretty much stayed the same and the only noticeable difference is that the songs have become even longer than they were on The Frail Tide, some of them clocking over 10 minutes ("Countless Skies"). The song themes have also stayed the same, mainly revolving nature and paganism.
The album kicks off with the track "Venator". It starts calmly and is quite relaxing till it hits the 1 minute mark. From there on you can immediately hear the good old Be'lakor. Deep, dark vocals; fierce double-bass drumming; good lead guitar work and interesting/beautiful melodies are what define the track. There are a lot of twists and turns during the song and the countless tempo changes keep it all very interesting. Solos and riffing are top notch and there really is nothing to complain about the track. After "Venator" comes arguably the best track on the album and it is titled "From Scythe to Sceptre". "From Scythe to Sceptre" is a classic Be'lakor song. Main attraction of the song is the primary riff that varies during the song a bit but generally the melody stays the same and what a melody it is. The bridge part is calmer then the rest of the song but all in all the song is really energetic and groovy. "From Scythe to Sceptre" is somewhat comparable to "Neither Shape Nor Shadow" from Be'lakor's first album because both of the tracks are very appealing to a common melodeath fan, but, at the same time, remaining very original and individual. Also what makes "From Scythe to Sceptre" just a tad better than the rest of the songs is the fact that it stays in your mind and is very compelling. And with that said, we have reached the point where I should introduce you to the biggest flaw of this record. It is a little bit unmemorable.
What makes The Frail Tide better than this is that all the songs were very memorable and individual on that. In here, a lot of songs just melt together into a one big track (or so does it seem). If to skip "From Scythe to Sceptre" and listen to the songs "Venator", "Outlive the Hand" and "Sun's Delusion" back-to-back, there evolves a feeling that these tracks are really just a one, near 30 minute track. While these tracks contain all the good qualities of Be'lakor, like the chaotic cymbal fills, the extremely fascinating guitar melodies and the fanciful and progressive song build-ups, there is something missing and that is individuality. All the mentioned songs have pretty much got the same build-up, and some of them (Sun's Delusion) are just a tad too long, losing its primal appeal at the end of the track. Also, while the guitar work on the songs is great, it is always very similar to the previous track and that may become a little disturbing when giving the album repeated listens. The music is great but the lack of individuality really hurts this album.
Stone's Reach is a decent follow-up to The Frail Tide. Musically it is very outstanding and features all the good qualities Be'lakor has, like the chaotic cymbal fills; interesting and progressive song structures; great guitar work and dark, growly vocals, but the lack of individuality hurts this album pretty bad. It seems that the guys in Be'lakor got used to their formula and while the results are still good, this album is definitely not as exciting as The Frail Tide was.

Review
Shadow Kingdom starts with "The Fall of the Shadow Kingdom", a grandiose, 24 minute track evoking the a similar sparkle to that of the title track from Daughters of Darkness, such a deep, entracing drone that the time seems to zip by. It is also evident that something new has happened with their recording technique, as it all sounds clearer than ever and subtle sounds seem to be more evident. "Gorgon" is a soft, lovely track, leaning into the more folk-oriented material found in TwinSisterMoon's solo work - I still hesitate to use the genre label of 'folk', because despite the acoustic guitar and certain folky motifs, this is still very ethereal work we're dealing with. The three song suite, and one of my favorite sections of the whole album "The Fear They May Come Back / Childrens of the Seventh Circle / The Dark Road" makes the transition from a delicate, melodic piano with drone-hum to a spaced-out interlude to a quiet, guitar-oriented outro, a peaceful, yet icy feeling throughout. "Cauled Ones and Birth Rugs" brings the mood up to a somewhat sunnier place, even becoming festive towards the end; upon listening to this point, I'd hope you'd be getting to know what I mean by what I've said before about the group's music seeming to have a "near-spiritual" effect! "Salty Tongue" carries on the lighter mood, ending with acoustics and vocals. "Go Away, Disappear" turns the tide towards more melancholy shores, and is another stand-out here amongst an overall fantastic album, and proves yet again how powerfully emotive Natural Snow Buildings can be. "Os Deus Cannibais" ranks on the same level of intensity of the first track here, delving into spookier territory - it's another long one (around 13 minutes), yet every second is used wisely! "The Faceless" is another dreamy acoustic track, also serving to break up the sheer force of the more strongly drone-based songs, leading into the spacey, haunting "The Crystal Bird", which concludes the first disc.
Disc two begins with "Sunbone", a gentle, breezy opener that serves as a buffer for a colossal three song suite, "Ghthonian Odyssey/Hell's Foundations/A Birth Mark Like A Scar"; this track more than any other blurs the line in one's mind as to whether this could be music from a strange, exotic land or another planet altogether! "From Their Body at Will" continues off into the astral plane, rolling along in its mellow way. "The Desolated/Vampires Introduced To Fear/Slayer March" finds the listener trekking on further still into the unknown, the unexpected twists of instrumentation and the layering (always a strong point for Natural Snow Buildings) still catching me off guard even as I'm listening again. "The Vein of Invisibility" is another rejuvenating breather placed between the all-consuming drone, as the next track, "Porridge Stick Into The Fire And Dust In The Direction Of The Sun" is quite seriously chilling, reminiscent of The Slayer of the King of Hell, but taken up an extra notch. "A Burial at Sea" ties-up Shadow Kingdom in a glorious, befittingly atmospheric way.
Listening to Natural Snow Buildings' discography, one album after another, has been a curious experience. With as prolific as they have been, it is quite evident how much the quality and depth of the material is enhanced with each release - something magical clearly occurred at the point of their most-heralded work thus far, The Dance of the Moon and the Sun and further still in The Snowbringer Cult, though I personally am still rather partial to Daughters of Darkness because it was the first of theirs that I had heard, based on a recommendation, and was utterly blown away by. Shadow Kingdom is absolutely a topmost favorite, of theirs and for this year overall! This will be considered a very important work in the Natual Snow Buildings canon, not only for the fantastic music contained within but also for being a very fine example of where you can hear just how much these two put their souls into the music. One of the most singularly excellent bands of the 2000s and responsible for some of my favorite music in general, what I have said before holds truer than ever: "here is a band that brings awareness to the process and delight of music creation itself, through their intricate, yet earthy, soundscapes, in hours upon hours of truly enjoyable music listening".

Kings of Convenience - Declaration of Dependence (2009)
I knew the duo had finally started working on a new album last year, but now we’ve got concrete details regarding the long-awaited record, which is officially titled Declaration of Dependence. Even an MP3 has made its way on the internet, which I discovered over on Taylor’s blog Music for Kids… called “Mrs Cold”.
Now, initially hearing this song I was reminded of the recent disappointment of many lead-singles from some of my favorite bands, and I must admit that it did have an affect on this one as well. It didn’t do anything for me, but KoC songs as a whole never standout individually, and work best in succession. You really have to take a moment and let the song soak in for it to really shine. Realizing this, I can accept this single for what it is: a slow moving, relaxing song where the acoustic guitar/violin flourishes makes me want to sit under a beach umbrella while listening to the crashing waves of some nearby ocean.
Expect Declaration of Dependence to hit shelves on October 20th. I couldn’t be happier to finally hear this album after so many years. Let’s just hope it lives up to expectations.

Review
Somehow this band has lots of integrity just by their look. These guys look like they live and breathe this style and only ignorant bands will postulate that look has nothing to do with success.
A short introduction to the Hardcore Superstar is in place. The band formed in 1997 and have released three albums supported by tours of Europe and Japan as well. In 2004 their last album entitled "No Regrets" brought the band to USA and upon their return from the states the band decided to take a break. Also on that tour guitarist Silver got into a fight with a reporter from the biggest paper in Sweden, which made the headlines in Sweden.
Hardcore Superstar certainly refuelled their batteries, because this album is energy packed and well written with high class songs.
An almost gothic keyboard intro leads to the first song Kick on The Upperclass. The song emphasizes everything about this great band; great vocals from Jocke Berg, attitude, great songwriting and a powerful production, which wraps up the tasty music.
Bag On Your Head is a pounding rocker with a beefed up gang choir and on the floor drums. The song changes pace, but the common denominator is ballsy Hard Rock.
Singer Jocke Berg definitely is Hardcore Superstar's trump card. He sounds diversified in his singing style. Last Forever reminds me of Faster Pussycat in their heyday with raw in your face Sleazy rock vocals. On Last Forever Jocke Berg sounds like Faster Pussycat vocalist Taime Downe and Silver's guitar sound is alike the Pussycat duo Muscat & Steele.
Hateful is another Sleazy gem that builds up to the chorus. The ending is brilliant.
So far the album has thrown off 2 singles in Hardcore Superstar's home country Sweden. We Don't Celebrate Sundays is an obvious sing-along hit! The same goes for album highlight Wild Boys, which sticks to your mind immediately with its pounding beat and "fist in the air" sing along chorus. Once again there is a trace of Faster Pussycat inspiration from their classic tune Babylon.
The snotty Cry Your Eyes Out has lots of kick ass attitude. The song underlines the straightforwardness of Hardcore Superstar - 2 verse lines and then right to the bridge.
Simple Man is another sleazy rock anthem, while Blood On Me has AC/DC undertones. The album ends with the only ballad-like song. Standing on the Verge is quite different from any of the songs on "Hardcore Superstar" but yet it's a melodic masterpiece. The laid back vibe creates a great emotion minute by minute and the song ends pompous.
I surely will be on the lookout for a Hardcore Superstar show somewhere near me, because these songs scream out to be heard live. Hardcore Superstar certainly enriches my CD collection and musical horizon...A nice surprise of 2005 and a great way to end the year!
This album is too good not to be heard!
